Journal Prompt–Creating Space

Today we're going to do a different kind of journal prompt -- an investment in future journaling, as it were.

It's easy to make excuses for not writing, or to think about how wonderful it would be if you had some sort of  ultimate writing retreat like a castle turret away from kids and family, or a simple hotel room with a cushy chair and lavender-scented sheets. But the reality is that even if you did score a weekend away to write, most of the time you're at home, in your usual surroundings. But what if you could capture the essence of that space and bring it into your life as it is now?

I used to envision taking time away at a little shack on the beach, maybe in Provincetown or on the Cape somewhere. Since that wasn't going to happen, I decided to try to bring the beach to me. I found a cushy white padded chair at Home Goods, a blue and green runner for my desk, a decoration of hanging shells for my window, and a sea-themed sign (I forget what it said). It's amazing how wonderful it was to sit in that small corner of my room in the morning and write.

So: spend a few minutes (or longer) writing about your ideal writing retreat, the kind of place where you'd like to take a few days to just journal and check in with yourself. What do your surroundings look like? What can you smell? What sounds are in the background, and what accommodations do you have around you?

Let the idea percolate, and see if you can pull out elements of this magical space to create your own special writing area.
